The Power of One individual expanded to the power of one family and the power of one Tribe beginning with Herbert, also known as Chief Klia of the Hoh Tribe. Described as a man who strongly values his family, friends, and culture, he was a well-respected member of the Hoh Tribal Council. He enjoyed drawing, singing, hunting, carving, and canoeing. His family honored his wishes to be a donor after his sudden death in 2006. Just two years later, his sister Viola also passed, leaving a further legacy of the gift of life through donation. Mary speaks eloquently about the power of each of their gifts, “Even though we’re gone, our compassion can take care of one another” and the power of one community, “Maybe we belong to different traditions and ways and cultures, but we’re all people of this earth. That’s what the creator made us.” Viola leaves behind four daughters and a son. Chief Klia wasn’t only a chief, but a dad, a grandfather, a brother, a mentor, and a teacher. “Organ donation was a vision he had of life being continued,” said Mary. Mary honors their legacies by speaking at health fairs about organ donation. She and her family perform traditional Paddle and Love Songs at events in honor of Viola and Chief Klia. Mary, a registered donor, says, “If I can give something to somebody to extend their life then that would make me really happy.”
